Question 3 of 6

If Parliament can amend the Constitution, why can it not alter its basic structure? Take the argument, not the conclusion.

RS

Because amending power is derived, not original — so it cannot be used to displace the document that grants it…

Follow-up

Good. Now test it: which clause grants that derived power, and what did the Court say about its limits in Kesavananda?

The question on every faculty agenda

Banning it failed. Governing it works.

The choice is no longer whether law students use AI. It is whether they use one your institution can see, shape, and stand behind when an examiner asks where a citation came from.

Answers no one can check

General assistants write fluently and cite confidently, including authorities that do not exist. A student cannot tell the difference. Neither, at speed, can a marker.

Usage you cannot see

It is already happening — on personal accounts, outside any policy, with your institution's coursework pasted into consumer tools.

The reasoning gets skipped

A chatbot hands over the conclusion. Legal education exists to teach the route to it.

Academic Mode answers all three: sources on every claim, access held by the institution, and study tools that make a student argue rather than copy.

Study tools

Ten ways to practise. None of them do the thinking.

Each tool changes the session structure, the prompting, and the feedback — while carrying the student's course, jurisdiction, and material into every session. Three carry the argument.

Socratic Drill

The tool asks; the student answers. It presses on the weak step in the reasoning instead of handing over a conclusion.

IRAC Practice

Section-by-section feedback on writing the student produced — where the issue is buried, where the application is thin.

Cold Call Prep

Rehearse the case, its context, and the follow-ups faculty actually ask, until the position can be defended out loud.

Moot workspace

Prepare the argument. Then prepare to defend it.

Competition results travel further than any brochure. The proposition, issues, research, memorial, and oral preparation stay in one matter — so a team that loses two members to graduation does not lose the file. Every issue keeps its own research thread and completion state, and saved authorities carry straight into the written submission.

Academic projects

Long-form work, finally in one place.

A thesis lives across a laptop, three cloud drives, and a supervisor's inbox. Projects keep sources, notes, plans, drafts, milestones, and collaborators together — and the workspace renames itself around the work.

Academic citations

Scholarship and statute, in the same answer.

Turn on academic citations for a research question and 8rney searches scholarly literature alongside statutes, judgments, and the student's own files — the difference between a seminar paper that argues and one that summarises.

Before the committee meets

The questions you will be asked.

Is this not just ChatGPT for law students?+

No. A general assistant produces fluent prose with no obligation to be right — invented case names are a known failure mode. Academic Mode runs on 8rney's research stack: jurisdiction-aware retrieval across statutes, case law, uploaded documents, and scholarly literature, with every claim traced to a source a student or examiner can open. Where it cannot find a verifiable source, it says so.

Does this help students cheat?+

Study Tools are built around the opposite behaviour. Socratic Drill questions the student rather than answering for them; IRAC Practice returns structural feedback on work the student wrote; Cold Call Prep rehearses defence of a position. Faculty set the policy — the tools are designed to make reasoning visible rather than to produce a finished answer.

Can university administrators read student work?+

No. Administration and academic content are deliberately separated. Administrators manage people, roles, invitations, imports, seats, and lifecycle status. Student and faculty academic work remains private to its author and the collaborators they invite.

How does access actually get managed?+

The institution owns the workspace. Administrators invite people individually or import a full roster from CSV or Excel, assign roles before invitations are accepted, watch activation and delivery in the invitation register, and see seat consumption against the licence at all times.

Which jurisdictions are supported?+

Research is jurisdiction-aware across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Singapore, with more being added. Jurisdiction controls apply to every statute and case reference in a response — useful for comparative courses and for international moots.

What do the academic citations add?+

When enabled for a research turn, 8rney searches OpenAlex for scholarly literature alongside legal sources. Results can carry authors, publication year, journal, citation count, open-access status, DOI, and links to OpenAlex or Scopus where available — so a seminar paper cites real scholarship, verifiably.

How is it licensed?+

As an institutional seat licence held by the university, not as individual student subscriptions. Seats can be scoped to a programme, a year, or the whole campus, and are reclaimed as cohorts graduate. Talk to us for pricing against your cohort size.

The cohort starting this term will use AI either way. Choose which one.

Bring us one cohort, one term, and one faculty lead. We will provision the workspace, import the roster, and let the work speak.
